Measurement contract

Specify the outcome, energy denominator, and system boundary.

The method relates a defined outcome to the energy attributed to its production. System boundaries, counterfactuals, quality adjustments, and attribution assumptions are reported with the ratio.

01

Outcome

Name the useful result. Tokens, hashes, and transactions are usually intermediate quantities.

02

Boundary

State which operational, embodied, network, and human inputs are included.

03

Counterfactual

Say what would have happened without the system or intervention.

04

Time and place

A joule at one node and hour is not interchangeable with a joule elsewhere.

05

Quality

Record task difficulty, correctness, reliability, and usefulness where they matter.

06

Attribution

Separate technical capability from adoption, displacement, and realized value.

07

Uncertainty

Publish assumptions, scenarios, and sensitivity to weights.

Evidence labels

PROVED
A deductive result under stated assumptions.
CONDITIONAL
A result that depends on a declared model or research design.
COMPUTATIONAL
A claim supported by executable tests or simulations.
OBSTRUCTED
A claim blocked by identification, data, or comparability limits.
OPEN
A question the program does not yet settle.
